Milbank Partner Rod Miller Offers Advice, Insights on Transactional Practice for Law Students on Vault Law Blog

Law students interested in practicing transactional law, from M&A to securities transactions, often ask how much business experience and training they need in order to launch a successful career. In a new Q&A for the Vault law blog, Capital Markets partner Rod Miller offers insights on the state of the market and advice for aspiring attorneys.

While a business background can be helpful, intellectual curiosity, strong writing skills and the ability to be responsive to clients are keys to success for transactional lawyers, Mr. Miller advises. Noting that Milbank offers training in advanced business topics through its unique Milbank@Harvard and other professional development programs, he tells up-and-coming lawyers, “I don’t think anyone should be intimidated just because they don’t have an accounting or business background. But you should have a desire to understand commercial transactions and understand why people in business are pursuing the transactions and commercial endeavors they are—so, a curiosity is a prerequisite, not experience or education.”
