Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP is pleased to be named one of three “General Litigation” finalists for New York Law Journal’s Litigation Department of the Year awards. The awards honor the top general and specialty litigation departments that have demonstrated excellence in trials, appeals and pro bono matters between January 1, 2017 and April 1, 2018.

In the past year, Milbank has prevailed in groundbreaking trials, achieved successful arbitration results, and successfully litigated cases with far-reaching effects. These include a record-setting patent arbitration win for Bayer, two of the most important mutual fund trials in a decade, with potentially billions at stake and far-reaching implications for the top mutual fund advisors in the US, an antitrust victory in the Second Circuit for BMI against the US Department of Justice impacting the more than $2 billion music performing industry. In a high-profile win on behalf of defendant Citibank in its litigation against South Korean Circuit board manufacturer Simmtech, Milbank prevailed in the first dispute over foreign exchange trade options to be litigated in the United States. Hundreds of similar cases had been litigated in Korea, and the ruling against Simmtech ensured that Korean plaintiffs could not relitigate these lawsuits against deeper-pocketed US affiliates.

With a longstanding commitment to pro bono, Milbank’s Litigation Department’s victories impacted our local communities as well taking on pro bono matters in nearly every area of public interest law. Some of the firm’s most notable recent victories include a win in the Louisiana Supreme Court in a death penalty wrong conviction case for a pro bono client who was on death row for 30 years, securing asylum for a gay man and his husband who both fled Russia as a result of persecution, and contributing to the NAACP LDF’s successful appeal before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in a school desegregation case.

Dan Perry, Practice Group Leader of the Litigation & Arbitration Group, said: “We are tremendously honored that New York Law Journal has recognized the accomplishments of our litigation department. We are particularly proud of our team of litigators, who have demonstrated a wide range of skills and expertise in commercial matters, sophisticated industry-and practice-specific knowledge, and an ability to quickly adapt to unexpected challenges and emerging areas of litigation that has proven to be invaluable to our clients.”
