Program to focus on reinforcing transaction-specific skills

Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP has unveiled a new training program aimed at bolstering transactional associates’ interdisciplinary skills from their first year at the firm onward. The program builds on the success of the firm’s exclusive Milbank@Harvard training program, which provides access to tailored MBA-level courses for mid- and senior-level lawyers.

The Deals@Milbank program will benefit associates across the firm’s US locations, including New York, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Over 100 associates are expected to go through the program in the coming year. Deals@Milbank fulfills Milbank’s goal to provide comprehensive training that benefits associates in the early, mid- and later stages of their careers, helping them excel at offering best-in-class client service, at the same time as becoming more well-rounded lawyers and individuals.

“Our people are our greatest asset,” said Chairman Scott A. Edelman. “When we make the right investments in our associates’ skills, especially at the outset of their careers, we better equip our associates to take on the complex, challenging work we do for clients on a daily basis and we help our associates maximize their career development wherever their career might take them.”

The program curriculum encompasses four key areas: writing and drafting, accounting and finance, leadership and team building, and legal knowledge. Sessions include multi-day, hands-on drafting and negotiating workshops, a business and finance simulation game, interactive programs on a wide range of substantive topics, and one-on-one coaching for legal writing, presentation skills, networking and leadership.

Two years ago, Milbank launched its comprehensive advocacy training program for litigation associates, Advocacy@Milbank. This successful program includes a series of interactive workshops and one-on-one coaching aimed at building the advocacy and communication skills essential to becoming an effective litigator and problem solver. Additionally, the first-of-its-kind Milbank@Harvard program, established in 2011, an unrivaled intensive business and legal curriculum taught on the Harvard campus over a four-year period, continues to benefit Milbank lawyers and clients. The program, which set the standard for professional development at elite law firms, is taught by faculty from graduate business and law schools at Harvard, with assistance from Milbank partners.
