Milbank LLP International Arbitration partner Viren Mascarenhas will speak at the one-day FIRE, Disputes & Investigations: Central Asia Conference on October 5 in Istanbul. The conference is part of Istanbul Arbitration Week (ISTAW), a week-long international arbitration event hosted by the Energy Disputes Arbitration Center (EDAC) and consists of a series of programming related to international investment, trade, and arbitration.
Mr. Mascarenhas is a speaker on the “Disputes Arising from Cross-Border Insolvencies and Restructurings” panel. The panel will focus on Central Asia and discuss cross-border insolvency recognition issues and application of foreign insolvency law in the region.
Mr. Mascarenhas specializes in investment, commercial and construction arbitration. He was part of the counsel teams that successfully defended the Republic of Turkey in high-profile investment arbitrations, including Libananco Holdings Co. Limited v. Republic of Türkiye, ICSID Case No. ARB/06/8, Ipek Investment Limited v. Republic of Türkiye, ICSID Case No. ARB/18/8, and Cascade Investments NV v. Republic of Türkiye, ICSID Case No. ARB/18/4. He has particular experience in disputes arising in the energy and mining sectors and has represented claimants/investors in investment arbitrations against Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Timor-Leste, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Special Counsel Seyda Duman, a member of Milbank’s Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance group, will also be attending ISTAW and the Thought Leaders 4 Conference. Ms. Duman is a fluent Turkish speaker and has extensive experience in Turkey.
