Milbank LLP has named Tawfiq Rangwala as Chair of the firm’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Mr. Rangwala assumes the role from Jerome McCluskey, who recently became the General Counsel of Milbank client Charlesbank Capital Partners.

Mr. Rangwala, a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group in New York, joined Milbank as a summer associate in 2001 and started as an associate in 2002. He also spent two years in Milbank’s London office. He is a long-time member of the DEI Committee and has been instrumental in the success of numerous DEI initiatives, including the initial development of the firm’s affinity group system and the firmwide DEI Learning Initiative. As Chair of the DEI Committee, Mr. Rangwala is focused on advancing the firm’s commitment to providing a workplace where everyone, regardless of background, can reach their maximum potential, and in highlighting the advantages diverse perspectives can bring to both clients and colleagues.

Mr. Rangwala’s commitment to equal justice and equity is best exemplified by his dedication to helping the less fortunate through pro bono work. Most recently, he led the Milbank team representing the non-profit All Muslim Association of America (AMAA) in a lawsuit against Stafford County, Virginia, which had unlawfully attempted to block AMAA’s construction of a religious cemetery. After years of litigation, the matter was finally resolved when the county agreed to repeal unconstitutional ordinances that violated AMAA’s rights and pay substantial damages to AMAA. Mr. Rangwala also has led a team handling a death penalty case in Louisiana for over a decade, successfully vacating the death sentence of our client who the team firmly believes was wrongfully convicted after being coerced into offering a false confession.

In 2021, Mr. Rangwala was named Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year by Chambers Diversity & Inclusion and received the South Asian Bar Association of New York’s Litigation Achievement Award. He also serves on the board of Legal Services NYC, a non-profit that provides free legal assistance to more than 100,000 low income New Yorkers annually.

Mr. Rangwala is also the author of a forthcoming non-fiction book about a major political scandal in Canada titled What WE Lost: Inside the Attack on Canada’s Largest Children’s Charity, with the audio book narrated by Martin Luther King III.
