Milbank Attorney Melanie Westover Yanez Discusses Prevailing in Religious Discrimination Case on Pro Bono Institute Podcast

Share

Milbank LLP special counsel Melanie Westover Yanez discussed a recent successful litigation and settlement in a pro bono matter centered on religious discrimination on an episode of the Pro Bono Institute’s PBI Signatory Showcase podcast.

Milbank represented All Muslim Association of America (AMAA), a non-profit that provides low-cost burial and funeral services to Muslims in the Washington metropolitan area, against Stafford County, Virginia and its Board of Supervisors.  Following the AMAA's purchase of land in the County, Defendants adopted an unprecedented ordinance that made it impossible for AMAA to develop a cemetery on its property. Milbank's lawsuit resulted in the county rolling back the ordinance and awarding the client significant damages in settlement. The Milbank team was led by partner Tawfiq Rangwala and Ms. Yanez, and included associates Hannah Blazek, Julie Wolf, Riah KimMike Frieda and Brett Lowe.

Ms. Yanez, a member of the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration Group in Washington, DC, represents clients in federal and state courts in complex commercial litigation and financial restructuring litigation.
