Benchmark Litigation Recognizes Seven Partners in 40 and Under Hot List for 2020

Seven Milbank partners have been recognized in the 2020 edition of Benchmark Litigation’s 40 and Under Hot List, which honors the achievements of those deemed the most promising emerging talent in their respective litigation communities by peers and clients.‎

We congratulate this year’s honorees:

Matthew Brod. As a partner in the Financial Restructuring Group, Matt’s practice focuses on the representation of debtors and creditors in chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. He also represents hedge funds and other financial institutions acquiring control positions in financially distressed companies. Matt has extensive experience negotiating plans of reorganization and structuring debtor-in-possession financing facilities. His recent achievements include representing the ad hoc committee of term loan lenders and IPCo noteholders of J. Crew, the official committee of unsecured creditors of Intelsat, and the ad hoc committee of second lien lenders of NPC International. Matt was previously recognized on the Hot List in 2019.

Lauren Doyle. As a partner in the Financial Restructuring Group, Lauren regularly represents companies, creditors, lenders and financial institutions in multi-billion dollar restructurings in the US and globally. Her recent achievements include representing OneWeb Global in its chapter 11 cases, Usina de Acucar Santa Terezinha in connection with a judicial restructuring in Brazil and Chapter 15 cases in New York, Nomura Securities as DIP and Exit lender in the restructuring of Stearns Lending, Mercuria as prepetition and DIP lender in its credit bid for the assets of Aegean Petroleum, the official committee of unsecured creditors of M&G Chemicals, and the ad hoc committee of unsecured senior creditors of Ultra Petroleum Corp. 

Lauren Drake. As a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group, Lauren focuses on intellectual property and patent litigation, including patent post grant proceedings. She has extensive experience representing clients in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and is admitted to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Lauren’s recent achievements include representing patentee Tris Pharma, Inc. in an infringement action against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and representing the world’s third largest manufacturer of base station antennas, China-based Rosenberger Asia Pacific, and related companies in defending against a trade secret misappropriation lawsuit filed by its competitor, US-based CommScope.

Adam Fee. As a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group, Adam advises companies, individuals and boards facing government investigations and conducting sensitive internal investigations. A former federal prosecutor, he has deep experience in a variety of white-collar and regulatory enforcement matters, including corruption, corporate espionage, securities and accounting fraud, and data protection and cyber security. His recent achievements include representing a former tech CEO in government investigations and several securities suits, and an individual investor in various investigations and civil suits concerning an alleged “pump and dump” scheme involving micro- and mid-cap securities. Adam was previously recognized on the Hot List in 2019.

Alexander Lees. As a partner in the Financial Restructuring and Litigation & Arbitration Groups, Alex is a commercial litigator whose practice focuses on bankruptcy, insolvency, and restructuring-related litigation. He has represented creditors, debtors, private equity sponsors, official committees, ad hoc groups, collateral agents, bidders, and other constituencies in bankruptcy proceedings and other litigation matters arising out of insolvency scenarios and financial restructuring transactions. His recent achievements include obtaining multiple significant summary judgement rulings on behalf of private equity client Centre Partners Management LLC, which has been sued for $680 million by a chapter 7 trustee of a former portfolio company. He is also representing Internap Corp. in its chapter 11 cases and the Raymond Sackler family, equity holders in the Purdue Pharma chapter 11 case. Alex was previously recognized on the Hot List in 2019.

John Lu. As a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group, John focuses his practice on patent, trade secrets, and life sciences litigation. He has represented clients in matters involving patent infringement, US-China trade secret misappropriation, biosimilars, ANDA litigation, and licensing disputes. Mr. Lu also represents clients in connection with proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. His clients have included Genentech, Natera, Rosenberger, Biogen, and Gilead. John’s recent achievements include representing, along with Lauren Drake, patentee Natera, Inc. in an infringement action against competitor ArcherDX, Inc., and representing the world’s third largest manufacturer of base station antennas, China-based Rosenberger Asia Pacific, in defending against a trade secret misappropriation lawsuit filed by its competitor, US-based CommScope.

Jed Schwartz. As partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group, Jed counsels companies and individuals on a wide variety of complex matters throughout the US, including commercial and securities litigation, stockholder disputes, bankruptcy matters, and regulatory investigations. He has significant experience representing clients in a broad range of industries including financial services, real estate and hospitality, and reinsurance. His recent achievements include representing VEREIT in federal securities class actions, and individual and derivative actions in federal and state court, the underwriters of multiple offerings of Camping World Holdings Inc.’s common stock in federal and state actions in several jurisdictions around the US, and the underwriters of the June 2015 offering of Endo International plc common stock in a Pennsylvania state court action asserting Securities Act claims arising from that offering. Jed was previously recognized on the Hot List in 2018 and 2019.
