Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if you do not interview on campus at my school?
We welcome applications from students attending schools that we are unable to visit.  Our hiring partners and recruiting team will carefully consider each write-in application that we receive.  To apply directly to the firm, please send your resume, transcript and a cover letter to the recruiting contact in the office to which you are applying please submit your resume and transcript to the relevant office here.

Where are callback interviews held?  Who will I meet with?
Callback interviews take place at the office to which you are applying and are an opportunity for you to learn more about Milbank.  You will have the opportunity to speak with two associates and two partners during your callback.  You are invited to also have lunch or coffee with a junior associate after your interview as a way to get to know the firm better.

When are hiring decisions made?
The Recruiting Committee meets regularly during the recruiting season.  Hiring decisions are typically made within one week of callback interviews.

I have received an offer but would like to get to know the firm better before making a decision.  Can I return for a second visit?
We encourage students holding offers to come into our offices for an additional visit.  The recruiting team will arrange for you to meet with a variety of individuals based on the interests you have communicated.

Can I split my summer between Milbank and another firm?
No.  Exceptions will be made only for students returning to the firm where they summered as a 1L.

Will I be able to pursue pro bono work during the summer program?  What kinds of areas might I be exposed to?

At the start of the summer, summer associates are given the opportunity to express interest in pursuing pro bono work. Summer associates can indicate what type of project they would like to pursue during their pro bono representation. The projects below have been developed to address the specific needs and interests of our summer associates:

  • Her Justice Summer Associate Program
  • Courtroom Advocates Project (CAP)
  • Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) Wills Project
  • Adoptions Project
  • TLDEF Name-Change Project

What type of social events are planned during the summer?
We want you to take in a full experience of what it is like to work and live in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, DC.  Past events have included a cruise around Manhattan, Yankees games, Broadway plays, Cirque du Soleil performances, food tours, a Malibu beach party, cooking classes, trips to Medieval Times and Six Flags, and dinners at partners’ homes.  Summer associates are invited to events hosted by our affinity groups.  These gatherings serve as an excellent opportunity to make connections and network with Milbank attorneys outside of the practice areas that you are rotating through.   Participation in social events is always optional.  However, most summer associates consider it a highlight of their summer experience and take advantage of as many of these events as possible.

Can I apply as a 1L?
1L students may apply for a summer associate position through our 1L Diversity Fellowship. 1L students should not apply until after December 1st of their first year. Please click here to apply for the 1L Diversity Fellowship.
