Firm scoops four awards including three Finance Firm of the Year deal awards

The Asian Lawyer has recognized Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP across four categories at their third annual “Emerging Markets” awards. The awards recognize “the year’s most innovative and creative deals … [and] those who have emerged as the most knowledgeable and trusted advisors across a range of practice areas in this exciting and vibrant region.”

Milbank was named Finance Firm of the Year, reflecting the firm’s strong Pan-Asia practice with The Asian Lawyer noting: “Milbank emerged the winner of finance firm of the year from a closely contested group of international and local firms as it advised on three out of four winning finance deals and has one of the most well-rounded finance practices in Southeast Asia led by the firm’s Singapore-based Asia managing partner David Zemans, a finance lawyer himself.”

The Asian Lawyer also recognized Milbank partners James Murray on project finance; David Zemans and Jacqueline Chan on banking, restructuring and acquisition finance and Paul Ng on aviation and asset finance for advising for the following award-winning transactions:

Finance Deal of the Year – Shipping/Aviation – VietJet $11.3 billion order of 100 Boeing Aircraft (Paul Ng)

Milbank won the shipping and aviation finance deal of the year award for its representation of VietJet's $11.3 billion order of 100 Boeing aircraft. The deal, signed during President Obama's visit to Vietnam in May, was the country's largest commercial aircraft order to date, and VietJet's first Boeing aircraft order.

Finance Deal of the Year – Insolvency – BLT (David Zemans, Jacqueline Chan, Abhi Raval)

Milbank advised a group of syndicated lenders to resolve the shipping company's financial distress. The solution was to transfer some of PT Berlian's assets to a new company majority owned by the syndicated lenders so that PT Berlian's debt would be forgiven and it was able to continue operations. The rare solution was made possible through a series of legal structures and documentation in Singapore and Indonesia.

Finance Deal of the Year – Banking – STATS ChipPac Ltd. Acq. (David Zemans, Jacqueline Chan)

Milbank represented lenders DBS Bank Ltd. and Bank of China in the banking deal of the year awarded to the $890 million financing of Chinese chipmaker Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics’ acquisition of Singaporean competitor STATS ChipPac Ltd.
