Pro Bono Counsel Anthony Perez Cassino authored the article “In a Dark Hour, a Bright Moment for US Pro Bono” for TrustLaw, a Thomson Reuters Foundation initiative that focuses on global pro bono work.
In the article, which discusses how the legal profession has changed over the course of 2020, Mr. Cassino notes how dozens of law firms partnered with nationwide pro bono programs to create advice clinics for small businesses impacted by the pandemic, and highlights how Milbank partnered with Mobilization for Justice to help individuals apply for stimulus payments from the federal government. He also discusses the recently created Law Firm Anti-Racism Alliance, which has been joined by over 200 law firms – including Milbank – and aims to “amplify the voices of communities and individuals oppressed by racism, to use the law as a vehicle for change that benefits communities of color and to promote racial equality in the law and in government institutions.”
Noting that the legal profession has shifted its efforts towards programs and initiatives that address unemployment, health care and racial justice in the United States, he comments, “It has been a difficult year with so many unique challenges and uncertainty, but the legal profession is finding new ways to help others and address some of the systemic issues that have vexed our country for years.”
