Milbank LLP's Singapore-based Transportation and Space partner Paul Ng was appointed as a specialist mediator in transport and aviation to the Panel of Specialist Mediators for the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC). The admission ceremony was officiated by Ms. Rahayu Mazam, Senior Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Law, during the Singapore Convention Week, organized by the Ministry of Law in collaboration with UNICITRAL United Nations Commission on International Trade Law this week.
The SIMC is an independent not-for-profit organization in Singapore providing mediation services, through its panel of international mediators, to parties wishing to resolve their cross-border commercial disputes amicably. Singapore is one of the inaugural ratifying countries for the Singapore Convention on Mediation (the Convention). The Convention is an international treaty that came into force on September 12, 2020, marking a significant development in international commercial dispute resolution. It allows parties the certainty that settlements via mediation have the force of law in terms of enforcement in ratified countries. The Convention, also known as the United Nations (UN) Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, has been signed by over 50 countries, including the United States, China and India and ratified by 10 countries to date.
