Milbank has been recognized in the Silver Band for “Patent Litigation” in IAM Patent 1000The World’s Leading Patent Professionals 2018 guide. Litigation and Intellectual Property partners Christopher Gaspar, Mark Scarsi, Errol Taylor and Fredrick Zullow also were named as leading patent litigators. Milbank’s Intellectual Property practice was distinguished for faring well with “whatever is thrown at it; whether that be a life science case involving monumentally complex gene technology” or a “dispute over a computer-implemented invention.” The group was also noted for having PhD-level scientists and software designers who are “superb litigators.”

Clients praise New York-based Chris Gaspar for having a style which lends itself well to alternative forms of dispute resolutions, pointing out that he exudes “such an appealing and incredible presentation style, which is balanced and informative.” Mr. Gaspar and arbitration partner Michael Nolan led the team that won the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit’s confirmation of a $456 million arbitration award involving genetic technology.

Los Angeles-based partner Mark Scarsi’s recent successes include defending the world’s largest technology companies in high-exposure patent-infringement cases, results that led clients to describe him as a “lawyer who works wonders.”

Clients commend Errol Taylor, who has served as lead trial and appellate counsel in multi-party, multinational cases for leading biopharma companies involving some of the world’s most prescribed medicines, and Fred Zullow, whose work includes complex multi-party, multi-patent, multi-jurisdiction litigations and patent enforcement for some of the world’s most successful drug products, for their biopharmaceutical practice. They note that the two New York-based partners “form a brilliant pairing for complex litigations.” “Errol has an excellent understanding of the business interests of his clients and the strategic thinking he exhibits around them is utterly impressive. He is especially good in court, coming across as profoundly knowledgeable and calm.” Regarding Mr. Zullow, they say: “Fred’s main strength is his sheer legal ability – he puts together the crispest arguments and conclusions.
