Milbank LLP was recognized by the Latin American Corporate Counsel Association (“LACCA”) as one of the most popular firms for Latin America’s banking sector. The research from LACCA notes Milbank represents 21 of the region’s 50 largest financial institutions, making it the second most popular law firm in the region for those institutions.
Who Represents Latin America’s Biggest Banks is an inaugural study by LACCA, an affiliate of leading Latin American legal publication Latin Lawyer. The study examines the most sought-after law firms for Latin America’s largest financial institutions by assets. Law firms are ranked by the number of banks and institutions for which they serve as external counsel.
Across Latin America in 2021, Milbank advised clients on a spate of matters, including private M&A, capital markets transactions and various finance matters. This high volume was driven particularly by a rise in activity in Brazil and Chile. Among the firm’s clients are Brazil’s three largest banks: Itaú Unibanco, Banco do Brasil and Banco Bradesco.
“We are proud to be recognized by the Latin American Corporate Counsel Association as a go-to firm for Latin America’s largest financial players,” said Milbank Global Capital Markets Group chair and Latin America Practice Group co-head Marcelo A. Mottesi. “Our clients had no shortage of new challenges to face in 2021—from the ongoing COVID-19 economic recovery to the growing appetite for sustainability finance and ESG—and they relied on our team’s trusted counsel to navigate these complex matters.”
Milbank Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance Group leader and Latin America Practice Group co-head Daniel D. Bartfeld noted in LACCA’s press release: “We advised on financings in Dollars, Pesos and Reais, with a significant volume of work handled for locally headquartered banks and local branches of international banks. There is so much liquidity available that lenders are providing increased debt through the capital structure.”
Milbank has one of the most active and varied legal practices of any international law firm in Latin America, representing clients in virtually every country in the region. Read more on the Who Represents Latin America’s Biggest Banks study here (subscription required).
