Milbank LLP was honored to receive this year’s Debt and Equity-Linked Deal of the Year award at the annual International Financial Law Review (IFLR) Middle East Awards ceremony. The deal was the first of its kind, with Milbank representing the underwriters on the financing in connection with CVC Capital Partners’ acquisition of a 30% stake in GEMS Education, the world’s largest K-12 private schools operator. This was the Middle East’s largest deal in 2019 and the first time a Middle Eastern issuer had elected to tap the US TLB market for a transaction of this size, which generated a substantial number of “first-of-a-kind” issues. The financing included US$1.65 billion-worth of term loans and senior secured notes.

The transatlantic Milbank team was led by European Leveraged Finance/Capital Markets partners Suhrud Mehta, Apostolos Gkoutzinis and Miko Bradford; special counsel Trevor Truman; associates Rahul Chatterji, Dimos Papanikolaou, Ken Ryan, David Waserstein, and Philipp Engel; New York-based Leveraged Finance partner Michael Bellucci and associate Jonathan Edwards.

Suhrud Mehta, Milbank’s Co-Head of European Leveraged Finance and Capital Markets said: “We are thrilled to be recognized by IFLR for our work in loan financings. Thanks to our strength in innovation and our ability to field highly experienced teams on both sides of the Atlantic, we are particularly known for our ground-breaking work in the area of bank/bond financings.”
