Marcelo Mottesi, head of the Global Capital Markets Group and co-head of the Latin America Practice Group at Milbank, was quoted in the Latin Lawyer article “Treading deep waters: international firms remain key in times of trouble,” which discusses how the global perspective provided by international law firms is vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
International law firms, the article notes, can provide invaluable insight on cross-border financing structures and multijurisdictional issues. Firms that are located in both the US and Europe, as well as Latin America, can follow legislative developments in multiple jurisdictions and provide insight into how European and US clients are handling similar scenarios.
To keep up with Latin America clients’ demand for international counsel, law firms have redirected their attorneys to work on restructuring matters. Mr. Mottesi notes that he has recently been advising clients on recovery strategies in sectors that have been impacted by the pandemic, such as leisure. He comments: “It’s a whole different world and we need to adapt to our new reality. The focus is now on ways of conserving cash and keeping the business going.”
