A Milbank pro bono team led by Capital Markets associate Robert (Bodie) Stewart has successfully assisted a client referred by Her Justice with a petition for permanent resident status in the United States, a nearly two-year-long endeavor. The team helped the client, a woman from Mexico who has lived and worked in the US for more than two decades, prepare a Battered Spouse Self-Petition under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). After a review period and an interview, she was recently granted permanent resident status, which also allows her the freedom to visit her ailing father in Mexico, as well as the right to apply for citizenship in three years.
Milbank has worked with Her Justice, which connects low-income women in New York City with essential legal services, for more than 20 years on matters including immigration, divorce and child custody.
