Tawfiq S. Rangwala, a partner in Milbank’s Litigation & Arbitration Group, has been selected as Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year, US Private Practice, by Chambers Diversity & Inclusion. The recognition reflects the firm’s commitment to advocating for racial and social justice and ending intolerance.

Mr. Rangwala’s pro bono work focuses on addressing systemic discrimination and injustices in criminal and civil cases. Chambers notes that “he has made pro bono work a mainstay throughout his 20-year career with Milbank.” Clients praise his approach: “His level of care sets the bar. He exemplifies excellence in pro bono work through his demonstrated passion, hard work, and client-focused care.”

Noteworthy pro bono matters led by Mr. Rangwala include the death penalty case of John Francis Wille in Louisiana, in which Milbank prevailed in vacating Mr. Wille’s death sentence and continues a longstanding battle to exonerate him, and the firm’s representation of the nonprofit All Muslim Association of America (AMAA) in a lawsuit against Stafford County, Virginia relating to state efforts to block construction of a Muslim cemetery.

In selecting Mr. Rangwala as the recipient of this honor, Chambers emphasized the consistency of his commitment to defending those whose rights have been infringed by the government: he has spent an average of over 250 hours annually on pro bono matters since becoming a partner, and has led teams that have devoted more than 35,000 hours (valued at more than $21 million) to serving the less fortunate.

Mr. Rangwala’s billable practice focuses on the defense of US and international regulatory and criminal enforcement matters, as well as internal investigations across multiple jurisdictions and industries. He also has extensive experience handling federal and state court litigation of complex commercial cases involving securities and corporate law, contract disputes and financial restructuring.

Mr. Rangwala serves on the Board of Directors of Legal Services NYC, the nation’s largest provider of legal services to the indigent.

“This recognition reflects Tawfiq’s achievements as a role model and a trailblazer in pro bono, corporate social responsibility and inclusion,” noted Milbank Chairman Scott A. Edelman. “His efforts have been instrumental in our firm’s commitment to supporting racial justice organizations and using the law to make a difference.”

Milbank also was shortlisted for the “Outstanding Firm for Pro Bono” for the second consecutive year.
