With Milbank LLP, Bucerius Law School gains a renowned, globally active commercial law firm as a strategic partner. The cooperation encompasses a broad, substantive, multi-year collaboration oriented toward commercial legal advisory services.
The aim of the cooperation is to contribute to the training of excellent lawyers in the age of artificial intelligence and to enable them to seize the opportunities that digitalization offers for the legal market. As a strategic partner of the Bucerius Legal Innovation Hub (BLIH), Milbank contributes its experience in both commercial legal advisory services and the training of young legal professionals, thereby strengthening the overarching approach of our research and innovation platform in the field of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. The BLIH connects the Bucerius Center for Legal Technology and Data Science with the Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession, combining technology-based research with legal market experience.
Furthermore, Milbank is contributing as a partner to a new teaching module focused on artificial intelligence ("Digital Literacy"), bringing practical experience to this initiative as well. The module will be newly incorporated into the curriculum of the state examination program with an integrated Bachelor of Laws degree starting in the coming academic year. With this, the law school will equip law students with the competencies they need to meet the demands of their future careers in the age of artificial intelligence.
In addition, Milbank is continuing its existing support for the Institute for Corporate and Capital Markets Law. Milbank thus remains committed to its core areas of corporate law and capital markets law.
Prof. Dr. Michael Grünberger, LL.M. (NYU), President of Bucerius Law School: “We are very pleased to place our successful collaboration with Milbank on a broader foundation. We particularly value our shared forward-looking perspective: By specifically supporting the education of our students and placing future-oriented competencies – such as the combination of a confident command of artificial intelligence on the one hand and independent legal judgment on the other – at the center of attention, the firm is actively shaping the legal market of tomorrow and assuming responsibility for the next generation of lawyers."
Dr. Steffen Oppenländer, Managing Partner of Milbank in Germany, adds: “We are purposefully expanding our existing collaboration with Bucerius Law School to jointly set new impulses at the intersection of law, innovation and education. Digitalization and artificial intelligence are already shaping our client work today. At the same time, independent and critical legal judgment remains decisive. Against this backdrop, our focus is not only on AI competencies, but above all on how we continue to develop young lawyers into outstanding legal professionals under changing educational conditions. It is important to us to convey to students the relevance of both aspects and thereby prepare them ideally for legal practice. With our engagement in the Bucerius Legal Innovation Hub and the ‘Digital Literacy’ module, we aim to contribute to integrating our practical experience even more strongly into the education of excellent future commercial lawyers.”
For many years, Bucerius Law School has relied on a strong network of committed partners from the legal profession, business and society. With the support of its funding partners, the university creates practice-oriented educational programs, strengthens the exchange between academia and practice, and develops innovative formats for a contemporary legal education. Students, partners and the university benefit equally from this approach.
