Emily Whittaker is a senior associate in the Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance Group. She advises lenders and sponsors on the development, financing and restructuring of a broad range of international and cross-border projects across a variety of industry sectors, including mining, power (both conventional and renewables) and water. Emily has considerable experience advising on multi-sourced project financings involving export credit agencies, multilaterals and development finance institutions.

Primary Focus & Experience

Her recent notable experience includes, advising:

  • KEXIM, K-Sure, UKEF, US Ex-Im and other ECAs and the Islamic institutions on the $12.5 billion financing for the Sadara Integrated Chemicals Project in Saudi Arabia, and most recently the restructuring of this Project;
  • the ECAs, DFIs and commercial banks in connection with the US$4.4 billion financing for the Oyu Tolgoi Copper and Gold Mining Project in Mongolia, and most recently the reprofiling of this Project;
  • the lenders in connection with the €680 million project bond financing for the development of the Skouries Copper and Gold Mining Project in Northern Greece. This project was structured to benefit from loans formulated pursuant to the Recovery and Resilience Facility established by the European Parliament;
  • KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH as lender in the US$75,100,000 term loan facility for the financing and operation of the Sangdong Tungsten Mine Project in the Republic of Korea. The facility is covered by insurance provided by Austrian Export Credit Agency, OeKB;
  • EBRD, OPIC and IFC in connection with the US$400 million financing of the 252MW Lekela West Bakr Wind Project in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt;
  • the lenders in connection with a financing to Sonnedix Power Holdings, indirect owner of a portfolio of 1.3 GW of solar PV projects located in the UK, Puerto Rico, Chile, France, Italy, Spain and Japan; and
  • the sponsors in relation to the development and financing of the Gás Natural Açu (GNA) LNG to power project located at the Port of Açu in Brazil.

Recognition & Accomplishments

Emily co-authored a chapter titled ‘Mining Projects’ in the most recent issue of John Dewar’s International Project Finance Law and Practice, Oxford University Press, United Kingdom. Emily also co-authored the United Kingdom chapter for ICLG’s Mining Laws and Regulation 2022 guide.
