Milbank LLP Transportation and Space partner and Practice Group Leader Alexandra Johnson and Litigation & Arbitration partner Atara Miller were named Lawyers of the Year in their respective practice areas at the Euromoney Women in Business Law Americas Awards 2023. The awards recognize complex and innovative firm initiatives that promote women in law and leading women practitioners from over 30 practice area specialisms.
Ms. Johnson was named Aviation Lawyer of the Year. Ms. Johnson regularly represents underwriters, issuers, lenders, lessors, borrowers, credit insurers and equity and debt investors. Her experience includes a variety of international financial and corporate transactions, including portfolio securitizations, acquisition financing, mergers and acquisitions and secured lending, that involve transportation assets, such as aircraft, railcars and loan obligations collateralized by aviation-related assets. Ms. Johnson has worked on some of the most complex and innovative financings involving aircraft, including many that have been recognized by industry publications as “Deals of the Year.” Ms. Johnson helped lead the creation and implementation of, and is the lead instructor for, the Deals@Milbank Transactional Drafting Series for junior associates at Milbank.
Ms. Miller was named Media & Entertainment Lawyer of the Year for the third consecutive year. Her practice focuses on federal and state court litigation of complex commercial matters and bankruptcy-related litigation. Ms. Miller litigates and negotiates appropriate rates for music performing rights on behalf of Broadcast Music, Inc., one of three national performance rights organizations. Most recently, she secured a victory on behalf of BMI against Live Nation, AEG and other major concert promoters that increased the fees paid to BMI’s affiliated songwriters, composers, and music publishers by more than 130%. She previously obtained a trial victory for BMI against Pandora Media, Inc. The decision was identified by Law360 as one of the biggest copyright rulings of the year. Ms. Miller also successfully challenged the Department of Justice’s interpretation of BMI’s antitrust Consent Decree and was identified as Litigator of the Week by The American Lawyer for the victory.
