Milbank LLP received a Lawyers Alliance for New York 2022 Institutional Cornerstone Award in recognition of the firm’s "extraordinary contributions through pro bono legal services to nonprofits."

Lawyers Alliance noted Milbank’s strong community service ethic, demonstrated by the firm’s expectation that all of its attorneys dedicate a minimum of 25 hours to pro bono work annually. In 2021, Milbank topped 57,000 pro bono hours globally and handled 700 active cases, with more than 95% of its US lawyers taking on pro bono matters.

Milbank attorneys have advised on 50 different legal matters for 39 Lawyers Alliance clients in the past five years, helping numerous organizations navigate leases, contracts, governance issues and strategic alliances. A few examples include:

  • reviewing and negotiating complex leases that benefitted several New York nonprofits, such as Forestdale, a multiservice agency in Western Queens serving more than 13,000 multicultural residents, and BxArts Factory, which provides space and support to local artists working in the Bronx;
  • drafting clearly written guidelines for community partners regarding the distribution of pandemic relief funds and developing a template grant agreement for coronavirus emergency grants to community partners for the New York Immigration Coalition, which had an exponential impact for more than 200 groups in New York State working with immigrants and refugees.
