Milbank Expands Litigation & Arbitration Practice with Addition of Partner Viren Mascarenhas in New York

Milbank LLP is pleased to announce that Viren Mascarenhas has joined the firm’s New York office as a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Group.

His extensive and international experience will be invaluable as we further expand our litigation and arbitration capabilities.”

Mr. Mascarenhas has built a highly regarded practice as an international arbitration lawyer, with nearly two decades of experience as counsel in domestic and international arbitration proceedings in a range of industries. He specializes in both commercial and investment arbitration, public international law, and business and human rights. Mr. Mascarenhas has particular experience in the energy (including LNG, nuclear, oil and gas, renewable energy, power and electricity) and mining industries.

Mr. Mascarenhas has extensive experience serving as counsel in high-profile international arbitrations. His recent notable representations include the Republic of Turkey in four investment treaty arbitrations (two in the mining sector and two in the media sector). Other significant representations include energy and mining companies in multibillion-dollar investment treaty and commercial arbitration claims brought against Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Uruguay and Venezuela. He has advised governments on a range of international law issues, including maritime and territorial boundary disputes, international environmental law, and treaty negotiations and enforcement. He has also represented owners and contractors in construction arbitration disputes, especially with regard to energy infrastructure projects.

Mr. Mascarenhas also brings experience outside of private practice. Earlier in his career, he joined the Special Court for Sierra Leone as a Legal Officer specializing in war crimes committed during the war in Sierra Leone and clerked at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Additionally, Mr. Mascarenhas has served as Lecturer-in-Law at his alma mater, Columbia Law School, since 2009 and currently teaches a seminar on international arbitration. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has been appointed to the panels of many leading arbitral institutions. 

Mr. Mascarenhas joins Milbank from the London and New York offices of King & Spalding, where he was a partner in the International Arbitration Practice Group. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School. Mr. Mascarenhas was previously a summer associate at Milbank in New York while earning his J.D.
