Helfried Schwarz is a partner in the New York office of Milbank LLP and a member of the firm's Transportation and Space Group. A partner since 1999, he was the partner in charge of the firm’s Frankfurt office from 2001 through 2005.
Primary Focus & Experience
Mr. Schwarz focuses mainly on aircraft and other structured equipment financings. He has particular expertise in domestic and cross-border leveraged lease transactions; pre-delivery payment and warehouse facilities; aircraft acquisitions and dispositions; enhanced equipment trust certificate offerings; aircraft portfolio securitizations; airline bankruptcies and restructurings; and export credit agency-supported financings.
His recent representations include advising on:
- the sale of aircraft lessor AWAS to Dubai Aerospace Enterprise
- the development of the Ex-Im Bank bond product
- the placement of the first Airbus A320neo order
- the ECA supported financing of Embraer aircraft

Mr. Schwarz has consistently been ranked in the “Band 1” tier of leading aviation finance lawyers in Chambers USA. He has been recommended for aviation law in Legal Media Group's The Best of the Best as well as their Guide to the World's Leading Aviation Lawyers. He has also been recognized as a leading practitioner in The Legal 500 United States, New York Super Lawyers, The International Who's Who of Aviation Lawyers and The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers. He is fluent in German.
Mr. Schwarz is a member of the Legal Advisory Panel to the Aviation Working Group and is co-author of the Practitioners' Guide to the Cape Town Convention and The Aircraft Protocol.
Mr. Schwarz serves on the board of directors of the NYU Law Alumni Association.
