Dan Bartfeld, partner and practice group leader of Milbank’s Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance group, said: “This year our clients have shown remarkable resilience despite the challenges of volatile markets, political uncertainty and a worldwide pandemic. Energy and infrastructure remain favored asset classes, as stable cash flows and essential facilities attract capital from private equity, institutional investors, banks and sponsors.”

Allan Marks, partner in the firm's Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance group, who edited the new issue of ProjectsPlus, noted: “Trends correlate in sometimes unintended ways. The push for sustainability, for instance by electrifying motor vehicles in Europe, increases demand for power (especially renewable energy) and also raw materials. Demand for battery metals is rising fast worldwide. These trends also dampen oil & gas prices, ironically making gas and LNG more attractive as a source for power generation, especially in Asia. Lower oil prices also spur oil exporters in the Mideast to invite private capital to invest in alternatives, like green hydrogen and smart cities. And throughout the Americas, public-private partnerships are being used to bring innovative solutions to mobility and energy efficiency. Our new issue pulls apart the strands of this complex braid.”

Be sure to read the issue's Fireside Chat, a conversation with Karen Wong, a renewable energy pioneer and long-time member of our group who retires this year, excerpted from our recent podcast episode Renewable Energy Past and Future: The Lawyer’s Role – “Be the Change You Wish to See”.
