Milbank hosted Con Orgullo (With Pride) on July 20, a virtual event featuring guest speaker Hon. Maite D. Oronoz-Rodríguez, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and the first openly LGBTQ+ female Chief Justice in US history. The event was sponsored by Milbank’s LaMano and Pride affinity groups.
Oronoz-Rodríguez shared her experiences and insights, emphasizing the role that law firms can play as advocates for change by focusing on the retention of attorneys of color and LGBTQ+ attorneys.
“Milbank is fully committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at the firm and retaining our most important asset – those who work here and contribute every day to our success,” said Mikeisha Anderson Jones, Milbank’s Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. “Chief Justice Oronoz-Rodríguez’s words were a powerful reminder and provided us with an opportunity to reflect on how we can positively impact the legal profession.”
Oronoz-Rodríguez was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico in February 2016, becoming the first openly LGBTQ female Chief Justice and, as such, the first in United States history. She is the third woman to preside over the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico as well as the youngest person to do so.
