Middle East

The Middle East has undergone extraordinary growth and change in recent years and, although the region as a whole has certain common features, each country has its own unique legal traditions and practices. Milbank has been advising clients throughout the region for over three decades, and during that period we have gained familiarity with the full range of practices and deal structures commonly applied across the region. We are therefore able to structure and execute complex transactions that are both consistent with international standards and also meet the requirements of local practices.

International recognition

Many of the transactions we have acted on have been recognized as regional, industry or even global “Deals of the Year” by leading trade journals, and Chambers Global has recognized us among the leaders in the region’s project finance market. A number of our lawyers have spent significant periods resident in the region and are thus able to provide unique insights into local practices.

Our experience has extended from Morocco to Iraq and from Egypt to Yemen, and we have been particularly active in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman. Our Corporate Group lawyers regularly advise parties acquiring assets across the region. Our litigators have conducted arbitrations in all of the region’s leading arbitration centers and have worked alongside local counsel in an array of different local court proceedings. Our Finance Group lawyers have experience in the Telecommunications, Oil and Gas (including upstream, refinery and liquefied natural gas), Power and Energy, Renewable Energy, Aviation and Infrastructure and Water sectors. We have acted on over half of the independent power projects to have reached financial close across the Gulf Cooperation Council. These transactions have been financed by international and regional banks, by export credit agencies, through the capital markets and by Islamic institutions. Our Islamic Finance Group has extensive experience in the full range of Shari’a-compliant financing structures, including Sukuks, and has worked throughout the region.
