President Obama Appoints Milbank Partner Glenn Gerstell to National Infrastructure Advisory Council

WASHINGTON, DC, September 12, 2011Glenn S. Gerstell, Managing Partner in the Washington, DC office of the international law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP, has been appointed as a member of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC) by President Barack Obama.   

In the White House press release announcing the appointment of Mr. Gerstell and other official, President Obama stated, “I am honored that these talented individuals have decided to join this Administration and serve our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.” 

Mr. Gerstell commented on his appointment, “It will be a privilege to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council and work with the other Council members as well as other federal officials to fulfill the Council’s mission – to advise the President on the vulnerability and resiliency of our nation’s infrastructure.” 

Created in 2001, NIAC is charged with improving the cooperation and partnership between the public and private sectors in securing the critical infrastructures; it advises the President and federal agencies on policies and strategies that range from risk assessment and management to information sharing to protective strategies and clarification on roles and responsibilities between public and private sectors.  NIAC is composed of a maximum of 30 members, appointed by the President from private industry, academia, and state and local government. 

Mr. Gerstell heads Milbank's Global Communications practice and has been active in the firm's international infrastructure financing group for more than 30 years. A partner since 1985, he previously served as Managing Partner in the firm's Hong Kong office (1989-1996) and Singapore office (1988-1989).  From 2001 to 2007, by appointment of the Mayor of the District of Colombia, Mr. Gerstell served as the chair of the board of directors of the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, the water utility for the national capital region.. He holds a B.A. from New York University and a J.D. from Columbia Law School.
