HONG KONG, May 30, 2012 – Dieter Yih, a partner who heads Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy’s Hong Kong local law practice, was elected the new President of the Law Society of Hong Kong in May 2012. He will lead the 20-member Council, which is the governing body of the Law Society of Hong Kong, the professional association for Hong Kong solicitors. Hong Kong has a split legal profession comprising solicitors and barristers, with the bulk of legal professionals being solicitors.
Dieter joined Milbank in 2011 to lead the firm’s new local law practice. His practice focuses on capital markets, private equity investments, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions in Hong Kong and mainland China. He has been leading high profile public M&A and IPOs deals for over two decades.
Dieter joined the Council of the Law Society of Hong Kong in 2003 and has been Vice-President since 2009. He currently chairs the Law Society’s Standing Committee on Standards and Development and the Legal Education Committee. He has a keen interest in maintaining the highest standards for the profession and the education and career of young lawyers. He has also served on many of the Society’s sub-committees and working groups.
“The practice of law in Hong Kong has become more challenging in recent years as a result of the continuing growth of the financial sector and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong’s increased appeal for international investors. The Law Society will continue its work on expanding the practice environment for its members,” said Mr. Yih.
