Carolyn C. Clark Elected Chairman of the Board of the Woodlawn Cemetery
April 8, 2008 -- Milbank Consulting partner Carolyn C. Clark has been elected Chairman of the Board of The Woodlawn Cemetery. The Woodlawn Board will oversee all operations of the 400-acre, active historic cemetery dedicated to remembering the lives of notable New Yorkers.
Established in 1863 and located in the Bronx, Woodlawn was designed by noted artists and architects. The cemetery has been named one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. Thousands of visitors attend tours, music programs, lectures and special events at Woodlawn annually. In 1967, what is generally believed to be the first community mausoleum on the East Coast of the United States, was built at Woodlawn. As a result, many other cemeteries throughout the United States have since added such structures.
Carolyn C. Clark has specialized in advising charitable, nonprofit organizations and estate planning for over forty years. She has extensive experience advising individuals, families and fiduciaries, as well as nonprofit organizations. For over forty years, she has practiced in the Milbank Trusts and Estates Department. Clark currently lectures in the Arts Administration Masters Program at Columbia University's Teachers College and Columbia Law School. She is a graduate from Harvard Law School and the University of Missouri, from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She served as the President of the Harvard Law School Association and on the Law School's Visiting Committee. She is a life member of the American Law Institute currently working on the project to articulate the Principles of Nonprofit Law. Clark serves as a Trustee of The Milbank Memorial Fund. She is a member of the Professional Advisory Council for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Central Park Conservancy and The Harvard Law School.
Clark is the first woman elected to Chair The Woodlawn Cemetery. She was also the first woman President of the Harvard Law School Association. In 1977, Clark was named the first woman partner at Milbank -- an accomplishment so significant at the time that it garnered national attention by The New York Times, 60 Minutes and other media outlets.
