Milbank Announces Recipients of 2007 Diversity Scholarships
NEW YORK, February 7, 2008 – The international law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP has awarded its 2007 Diversity Scholarships to Chaandi McGruder and Drew Stewart. Ms. McGruder and Mr. Stewart will each receive a salaried summer associate position and also receive a $50,000 scholarship. Ms. McGruder will be resident in Milbank’s New York office and Mr. Stewart will split the summer between the Firm’s New York and Washington, DC offices.
Errol B. Taylor, New York-based Milbank partner and co-chair of the Firm’s Diversity Committee, commented, “The Milbank Diversity Scholars Program is an important initiative in the Firm’s long-standing commitment to develop a diverse culture that benefits from the perspectives and contributions of each individual. This year’s scholars, Chaandi and Drew, epitomize the exceptional character and legal talent that Milbank seeks to foster through the Program.”
Currently in her second year at Stanford Law School, Ms. McGruder graduated cum laude in sociology from Harvard University in 2005. She is a member of the Stanford Law Review, an ABA representative, and is actively involved in a number of student organizations, including the Stanford Law Association, and the Stanford Black Law Students’ Association.
Mr. Stewart is a second-year student at Harvard Law School. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude from Morehouse College in 2006, receiving the highest departmental honor in political science. He is a member of the Harvard Law School Student Government, the Harvard Black Law Students Association (HBLSA) Leadership and Mentoring Program, and the HBLSA Street Law Program. In addition, Mr. Stewart has been honored as a Jackie Robinson Foundation Extra-Inning Fellow and as a NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Earl Warren Scholar. Milbank’s Diversity Scholars Program was created to enhance access to financial resources and summer associate job opportunities for students who are members of groups traditionally under represented in large law firms. The Diversity Scholars Program provides two law students each year with a salaried summer associate position and a $50,000 scholarship. The first $15,000 will be distributed during the students’ third year of law school, and payment of the remaining $35,000 is contingent upon receipt and acceptance by the students of a permanent Milbank offer and will be paid upon their joining the Firm.
