Lawrence Kass Appointed Chair of the Federal Circuit Bar Association Rules Committee

Lawrence Kass, an associate in the Litigation department and the Intellectual Property practice group, was recently appointed Chair of the Rules Committee of the Federal Circuit Bar Association (FCBA). The FCBA is a national organization for the bar of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The Court has jurisdiction over appeals in a variety
of subject areas, including all patent-related appeals from every U.S. district court, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The FCBA offers a forum for common concerns and dialogue between bar and court, government counsel and private practitioner, litigator, and corporate counsel. It also sponsors regional seminars regarding current practice in the Court. Members of the FCBA come from all areas of the country.

The Rules Committee studies and makes recommendations for amendments to the Federal Circuit’s rules. Committee members have the opportunity to learn of proposed amendments and the policies behind them. As Rules Committee Chair, Mr. Kass will lead the committee’s consideration of such amendments and present recommendations to the Court.

Milbank attorneys now hold two leadership positions at the FCBA. Jay Alexander, Of Counsel in Milbank’s Washington, D.C. office, a member of the Litigation department, chairs the FCBA’s Pro Bono Committee which matches members who have indicated an interest in serving as pro bono counsel in a particular area of the court’s jurisdiction with litigants who request pro bono assistance.

Mr. Kass received dual degrees in chemistry and engineering from the State University of New York (Geneseo and Buffalo) in 1988 and, while a research engineer he earned his J.D. from Pace University in 1995. Mr. Kass clerked for Federal Circuit Judge Alvin A. Schall from 1998 to 1999. He has been an associate in Milbank's New York office since leaving the Court.
