Milbank Names James G. Cavoli Of Counsel in Litigation Department

Former Assistant United States Attorney Joins Firm’s New York Office

NEW YORK, NY, November 14, 2005
– Reflecting the longstanding strength and continued growth of its litigation and arbitration practice, the international law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP has announced that James Cavoli has joined the New York office as Of Counsel in the Litigation Group. Mr. Cavoli joins Milbank after seven and a half years in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Commenting on the appointment, David Gelfand, partner and head of Milbank’s National Litigation Group, stated, “We are extremely pleased to have an attorney of Jamie’s caliber join Milbank. His depth and breadth of experience will further enhance our established white-collar practice, as well as add to our capabilities in complex civil litigation and governmental investigative work.”

Immediately prior to joining Milbank, JAMES CAVOLI was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office. Mr. Cavoli began his tenure as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1998 in the Criminal Division, first serving in the General Crimes Unit, and then the Major Crimes Unit, where he prosecuted health care fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, tax fraud and other white-collar offenses, and served as health care fraud coordinator. He later moved to the Securities Fraud Unit, where he focused on accounting fraud and insider trading cases.

During his tenure at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Cavoli prosecuted numerous cases, including high profile jury trials against Neils Lauersen (a celebrated fertility doctor charged with insurance fraud and convicted on all counts), and Andrew Crispo (a noted New York art dealer charged with extortion and obstruction of justice and convicted on all counts). Mr. Cavoli also oversaw a successful sting operation in Manhattan which uncovered a complex money laundering scheme wherein Columbian drug traffickers used Diamond District jewelers to smuggle gold out of the United States in the form of wrenches and light switches (fourteen people were arrested and convicted).

Mr. Cavoli also gained significant experience as an appellate attorney while at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, spending more than a year as Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney, one of only six supervisors responsible for overseeing all briefing and argument by the U.S. Attorney’s Office before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

James Cavoli began his legal career as an associate in the litigation department at Rogers & Wells. He received his J.D. in 1992 from Albany Law School of Union University, where he was an editor of the Law Review, and his B.S. in 1988 from Siena College.
