Training is the most important element in formally developing our lawyers. In addition to the hands-on experience of working and interacting directly with partners, Milbank has mandatory offsite training programs for first-year and mid-level associates. These programs are designed to give associates an intensive and comprehensive learning experience.
The intensive nature of the program affords associates the ability to take on responsibility in the early stages of their careers and to continue to perform at the high end of the learning curve. Even though junior associates are given a substantial amount of responsibility, our "open door" policy ensures that they receive appropriate guidance and are not left to "sink or swim."
New associates are given a formal appraisal after six months; annual review sessions are held after 18 months. Our evaluation system was designed by a committee of partners and associates and includes a focus on specific substantive skills that need to be developed. Other factors included in the appraisal are pro bono activities, continuing legal education and recruiting efforts. The Legal Personnel Advisory Group, comprised of associates, meets regularly to discuss matters such as training, development and quality of life issues.
