Neil J. Wertlieb is the General Counsel of Milbank LLP.

Primary Focus & Experience
Mr. Wertlieb serves as the General Counsel of Milbank LLP. He is also Co-Chair of the firm’s Risk Management Committee. He was a partner in the firm’s Corporate Group for approximately two decades, where his practice focused primarily on acquisitions, securities offerings and restructurings.
Prior to joining Milbank in 1995, Mr. Wertlieb was General Counsel for a large public telecommunications and broadcasting company, and for the Los Angeles Kings Hockey Team. Mr. Wertlieb served as a Judicial Extern for Justice Stanley Mosk on the California Supreme Court in 1983.
Mr. Wertlieb has served as an expert witness in cases involving business transactions, corporate governance and fiduciary duties, and in disputes involving attorney ethics and attorney malpractice.
Recognition & Accomplishments
Mr. Wertlieb is the Inaugural Co-Chair and a Founding Member of the Ethics Committee of the California Lawyers Association, and served as Chair of the Ethics Committees of both the California State Bar and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
Mr. Wertlieb is an Adjunct Professor at UCLA School of Law where (since 2002) he has taught courses on business transactions. He has also taught similar courses as a Visiting Lecturer at UC Berkeley School of Law, USC Gould School of Law, UC Irvine School of Law, and Santa Clara University School of Law. And he works with Harvard Law School Executive Education as Senior Advisor, Milbank@Harvard.
He is the General Editor of Ballantine & Sterling: California Corporation Laws, a 7-volume treatise on the laws governing corporations and other business entities in California. He is also a former Chair of both the California State Bar’s Business Law Section and its Corporations Committee. And he has served as a Special Deputy Trial Counsel for the California State Bar’s Office of Chief Trial Counsel, and as a Mediator for the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs.
He received his law degree in 1984 from the University of California Berkeley School of Law.
