Nick Angel is a partner based in the London office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and a member of Milbank’s Financial Restructuring Group. Nick has particular expertise in complex, international and national corporate reconstruction and insolvency matters. Nick regularly acts for all the different types of stakeholder in a restructuring, including debtor companies and their directors, senior secured lenders, junior creditors, government regulators, distressed investors and insolvency practitioners. Nick also has a transactional, M&A background and he brings this experience to his restructuring and insolvency work. Nick is recognised as a leading restructuring lawyer and ranked highly in legal directories such as Chambers, Legal 500 and Guide to the World’s Leading Restructuring Lawyers. He has been described by Chambers & Partners as having a reputation for being “calm and collected yet bold at the same time. Personable and extremely dynamic, he provides a quality client service” and is “highly rated in the field and regarded as a great commercial lawyer”. Prior to joining Milbank, Nick had been a partner at a major international law firm where he had served as head of its Restructuring and Special Situtations Group. At his previous firm, Nick also served as Managing Partner, Germany (1999 to 2002), and Board Member (2000 to 2002). Advising Teesside Power Limited, a large independently owned power station, on restructuring matters. Acting for one of the major creditors in the restructuring of British Energy, UK’s largest producer of electricity. Acting for Cerberus in relation to its acquisition and restructuring of Focus DIY, one of the largest do-it-yourself and gardening products retailer in the UK. Acting for Danoptra, one of the leading players in the UK gaming and leisure facilities industries, on its restructuring. Acting for a creditor with one of the largest claims in the Enron estate. Acting as European counsel to the official committee of unsecured creditors of Federal Mogul. Federal Mogul’s collapse was, at the time, one of the world’s largest insolvencies with assets of approximately US$10.15 billion and liabilities of US$8.6 billion. Nick has also handled numerous leveraged financing restructurings, including ISG, SSP and Munksjö. He has also advised directors and insolvency practitioners in the retail industry, including Kookai, MK One, Land of Leather and Bay Trading. Nick’s M&A experience includes acting for Virgin on several transactions, including the establishment of Virgin Mobile; the acquisition of the former Virgin Cinema chain; the acquisition of Our Price; the acquisition of Waterstones and the HMV record business, which were consolidated to create HMV; and numerous private equity transactions. Nick received his LL.B. Hons degree from Bristol University and is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
