Matthias Schell is an associate in the Munich office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. He joined Milbank in 2006.

Primary Focus & Experience

Mr. Schell’s practice area comprises all aspects of national and international tax law. He is particularly specialized in advising on tax aspects of cross-border transactions, corporate reorganisation and the development of funds structures. Mr. Schell has also a strong expertise in the area of tax related arbitration proceedings.

His recent major transactions include the legal advice to:

  • ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG on the takeover of the pan-European TV, radio and print conglomerate SBS Broadcasting Group.
  • HVB Capital Partners AG on its investment in the pay-TV platform Premiere Star GmbH and on various other investments.
  • Advent International and The Carlyle Group on the joint acquisition of H.C. Starck Group from Bayer AG.
  • Nordwind Capital Partners on the acquisitions of participations in Austrian Niedermeyer GmbH and Cosmos Elektrohandels GmbH & Co. KG as well as with respect to the acquisition of ISE Automotive Group.
  • FIFA Marketing & TV AG in the context of the 2006 Men World Soccer Championship and on the Women World Championship 2011/Women U20 World Championship 2010.
  • Sixt AG on the structuring of its joint venture “Drive Now” with BMW Group.

Mr. Schell studied law in Augsburg and Malibu, California. He holds a doctorate of the university of Augsburg and a Magister Legum "International Commercial Law". Prior to joining Milbank in 2006, he worked as a teaching assistant in the area of tax and public law at the University of Augsburg.

Mr. Schell is author of various publications in the area of national and international tax law. He is panelist in a seminar of the German Attorneys Institute on Transformation Law and Transformation Tax Law.

Mr. Schell is admitted to the German bar and is accredited as tax advisor and certified tax lawyer (Steuerberater, Fachanwalt für Steuerrecht) in Germany. He speaks German and English.
