Chris Gaspar is a partner in the New York office of Milbank and a member of the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration Group, with a focus on intellectual property.

Primary Focus & Experience

Mr. Gaspar’s intellectual property litigation and counseling practice includes a broad range of technologies and products in fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, computer/electrical, communication networks and infrastructure, financial services, market data, and medical devices. He has considerable experience in every substantial aspect of US district court, appellate court, International Trade Commission, and state court practice in intellectual property litigation, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade dress, and trade secrets. He has served as lead counsel to some of the world’s largest companies in their highest-stakes matters.

Mr. Gaspar also guides clients on a wide array of intellectual property issues arising in M&A, financing, and financial restructuring transactions. He has also obtained patents, copyrights, and trademarks, and counsels on the protection of trade secrets in various industries.

Mr. Gaspar is an active member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the New York Intellectual Property Law Association. Before law school, Mr. Gaspar was an engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes designing flight-control and autopilot computer systems for the 777.

Mr. Gaspar has been recognized by Benchmark Litigation as one of the leading lawyers in America for intellectual property. He has been ranked each year as a “Patent Star” in the Managing Intellectual Property IP Star rankings and has repeatedly been recognized as a leading practitioner by IAM Patent 1000. In 2023, Mr. Gaspar was ranked in the Gold Band by IAM Patent 1000: “Christopher is terrific. He is commercial and lays out the risks of a potential transaction, but always with a view as to whether the risks are critical or ones which can be priced. Chris is extremely thorough and a good communicator. He translates challenging concepts into an easy-to-understand language for non-lawyers.” (IAM Patent 1000 2023) Mr. Gaspar is also recognized by Legal 500 in the area of Patent Litigation. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, he was recognized in Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Litigators in America guide.

Mr. Gaspar is a frequent lecturer on IP and patent law, including invited speeches for the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Intellectual Property Owners Association, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the US Patent and Trademark Office, and others. His articles have been published in the American Intellectual Property Law Quarterly Journal, New York Law Journal, Intellectual Property Today, and elsewhere.
